Spiders and their webs, they live rent-free everywhere on your house and still haven’t got the message that no-one likes them! Most spiders are nocturnal or active at night and will scurry away when disturbed unless they are tending egg sacs or young. During the day, they usually remain hidden and inactive in cracks and crevices, their webs, etc. Spider bites usually result only with great provocation such as squeezing or handling.
On the topic of bites very few New Zealand spiders have bites which can cause significant injury to humans, and of these, only the Katipo is native. Katipo bites have been known to cause systemic effects, such as hypertension, seizure, or coma, though no deaths as a result of Katipo bites have been recorded for over 200 years.
Treatment:
Typically spider treatments are applied via chemical spraying on the exterior of the house. Interior spraying can be completed if you are concerned about whitetail or daddy long leg spiders. Some non-chemical ways you can prevent spiders being around is by frequent waterblasting of your house, keeping bad smelly rubbish to a minimum as it draws in flies which is a spiders source of food. Also if you use exterior lighting, keep it to a minimum as it draws in midges/mosquitoes and small bugs which most spiders eat.
